TOWING

"Where do I stand on Towing?"

090If you, or your staff, need to tow any type of trailer, or another vehicle (for instance, in the event of a breakdown) you need to know the rules on vehicle and trailer weights and licence entitlements. The regulations relating to licensing and towing constantly change.

ONWARD Quick Guide

Drivers who passed their car test before
January 1st, 1997

* May drive any  vehicle up to 7500Kg MAM (maximum authorised mass). They may in addition tow any trailer up to 750Kg, the legal maximum combination MAM being 8250Kg.

* There is no legal limit on the weight of a braked trailer that can be towed by a car or commercial vehicle under 1525Kg unladen weight, but the manufacturer's plate limit on the vehicle must be used as the legal limit.

* Any commercial vehicle with an unladen weight of more than 1525Kg must
be fitted with a Ministry Plate under the Goods Vehicle (Plating and Testing) Regulations 1988. This plate will show the MAM and gross train weight for the vehicle: it is an offence to exceed the figures shown.

Drivers who passed their car test after
January 1st, 1997

* May not drive any vehicle with a MAM greater than 3500Kg, and with more than 8 passenger seats.

* They may tow a trailer up to 750Kg MAM, giving a maximum combined MAM of 4250Kg.

* They may tow a trailer with a MAM greater than 750Kg, providing the trailer MAM does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. The combined maximum must not exceed 3500Kg MAM.

"How can I tow a heavier trailer?"

It will be necessary to take a DSA Test of Towing Ability in order to obtain Category B+E on your licence. The tests are conducted at Commercial Vehicle Test centres, and require a much higher standard of driving than the learner test. In addition there is a trailer manoeuvring exercise (conducted off the highway), together with hitching and unhitching the trailer from the tow vehicle.
